New American Reading Series. Free! The kickoff event for New American Press’ New American Reading Series will begin at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at Donahue’s Irish Pub, 215 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. Scheduled readers include Chantel Mitchell, Tom Blomain, Okla Elliott, Matthew Hinton, Dawn Colangelo Leas and featured reader Rion Amilcar Scott. Raul Clement will host the event. City Market Oktoberfest. Free! Grab your freshest pair of lederhosen and head down to City Market and Cafe, 25 Public Square, Wilkes-Barre for City Market and Cafe’s first Oktoberfest celebration. Vampire week, featuring a bloody good special beverage ends Oct. 8, with zombie week kicking off Oct. 9. It concludes Oct. 15. The cafe also has a number of monster-themed games, including the top-rated Betrayal at House on the Hill. The Game Chateau offers unlimited play for $10 a person or $3.50 per hour.
