WEST PITTSTON — It may not be the largest hair salon in the area, but that’s what makes Polish’d Hair and Nail Salon special.

Amy Lockett, 35, opened her new business on Luzerne Avenue last September, a few months after she graduated from Empire Beauty School in Moosic.

The Pittston resident offers standard hair cuts for women, men and children as well as coloring, highlights and gel manicures.

While she enjoys doing it all, Lockett most enjoys doing nails.

“I really love doing nails,” she said. “I have to say for many years that’s what I was after — doing nails — and then when I went to school, you learn the process and you learn it all.”

The inside of the building has two chairs for cutting and styling hair, a sink for washing hair, two chairs with hair dryers and a table to do manicures. There is also a TV in the salon.

Lockett said the building’s owners advertised at her school for someone to rent it, and she immediately jumped on the opportunity.

“It was a hair salon before,” she said. “(The previous renter) left in December of 2014 and I moved in last year.”

Lockett is the only employee at Polish’d Hair and Nail Salon but plans to hire another employee in the near future.

Because of the small building and Lockett being the sole employee, she can engage in in-depth conversations with her customers.

The mother of two boys, Brandon, 7, and Kevin III, 11, Lockett is all about creating an atmosphere where clients can feel comfortable, something her husband, Kevin Jr., said she excels at.

“It’s more sociable,” he said. “You want to sit there and converse and there’s nobody standing behind you saying you can’t.”

Dallas resident Katrina Weiskerger, 22, knows Lockett from working with her at Macy’s in the Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes-Barre and was also one of her first customers.

She loves the special connection Lockett has with her customers.

“It’s more family oriented because of how one-on-one she is,” Weiskerger said. “My mother and I came here together and she took care of both of us, and it was like a mother-daughter day. It was really close; there weren’t any other people and I think she contributes in that type of way.”

Polish’d Hair and Nail Salon is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday by appointment but walk-ins are welcome.
