The Steamtown Music Awards are gearing up for a second wind, and if you’re a fan of the local music scene it’s all you should really be talking about.

Last October, the first Steamtown Music Awards made waves for being the inaugural award ceremony honoring the region’s best music in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The award show honored all genres of music, from folk and hip-hop to pop and reggae — even DJs were in the mix of honorees.

The award ceremony isn’t until September 17, but the excitement is real and voting is now open.

Now through July 1, music fans are invited to visit Electric City Music Conference’s website at to place their vote for their favorites in the local music scene.

“People are allowed to nominate as many bands as many times as they’d like. The nomination process is our way of finding every deserving band in the area,” ECMC co-director Joe Caviston said.

The award show plans to evolve this year with the introduction of new categories.

“Jazz, jam and blues acts were in the same category last year, now they are separate awards; same with DJ/Electronic Act. We want to give away as many awards as possible this year,” Caviston said.

Music industry professionals will also be recognized. The addition of Recording Studio of the Year, Producer/Engineer of the Year, Radio Station of the Year, Radio Personality of the Year, Publication/Blog of the Year and Music Journalist of the Year.

“We have already recieved four times the amount of nominations in the first five days than we received all of last year. It’s amazing to see the excitement build for all the talent this area has to offer,” Caviston said.

Voting is up for almost four more months, so there’s no excuse to have your favorite musician or industry professional nominated come July.

Nominees will be revealed Wednesday, July 22, in Weekender.
