…should you do with that kayak that’s been laying around all winter?
Take advantage of the Greater Pittston Historical Society’s Historical Kayak Tour of the Susquehanna River on July 13, starting at 10 a.m.
Kayakers will travel from Apple Tree Boat Launch in Harding and end at the rear of the Midway Shopping Center in Wyoming. A stop is planned at the Conrail archaeological dig site in Duryea with a presentation by the Frances Dorrance Chapter Society for PA Archaeology. After that, it’s downriver to Riverfront Park in Pittston for lunch where there will be a verbal presentation on the history of the Susquehanna River in the Wyoming Valley by Mr. Richard Fitzsimmons, local river historian from the North Branch Land Trust. The tour includes a lunch by Cooper’s Seafood.
Hosted by Endless Mountain Outfitters, participants can register or prepay by calling 570.746.9140. Prices are $65, single kayak; $80, tandem kayak; or $25, bring your own kayak.

The Northeast Fair is back at Route 315 in Pittston from June 17 through June 22.
Group & Family Day will be June 20, and the fair will open at 9:15 a.m. and feature morning and afternoon educational and entertainment activities specially designed for children and early teens, along with over 25 amusement park rides. Fair gate admission is $10 and only $7 with advance purchase, which includes unlimited free rides, all shows and exhibits, concerts, and motorsports events. On June 21 and 22 from 1 to 4 p.m., gate admission is only $7 and is good to late night closing.

…can you stock up on a new supply of books while also helping out a local organization?
It’s that time of year again: the Osterhout Library Book Sale is set for June 14 through 21 at 71 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre.
The sale will run June 14 from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., June 16-19 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and June 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. As always, the final day, June 21, will be “Bag Day,” when book lovers can buy a bag full of books for a mere $5.
In addition to books, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, records, and various other items are on sale.
Why
…should you chug along to the Steamtown National Historic Site some time before Labor Day?
Currently, “Hollywood Rides the Rails” is an exhibit being shown there, one that celebrates train-themed films and the stars who rode in them. The exhibit is located in the park’s Changing Exhibits Gallery and features movie stills, artifacts, posters, and the 1903 film “The Great Train Robbery.”
The exhibit, open through Labor Day, is included in the park’s daily entrance fee, which is $7 for ages 16 and older and free for children 15 and younger accompanied by an adult. Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
